Formerly known as Mogador, Essaouira is one of the loveliest cities in the Moroccan Atlantic coast and for many years served as the main link with between Morocco and Europe. The city Medina is an excellent example of an 18th Century fortified town in the European Style but in an African context. UNESCO has listed Essaouira’s Medina as a World Heritage site. Kite and windsurf lovers will find the city is an exceptional place for watersports. Various hire centres offer equipment, mainly in Essaouira Bay, Sidi Kaouki, Cape Sim and Mouley Bouzertoune. Each June the Gnawa and World Music Festival takes place and attracts 450.000 spectators and the city likes to be considered a city of culture. Worth mentioning a few movies were shot, notably Orson Welles “Othello”.
