Capital of the State of Pernambuco and one of the largest cities on the Sertão, the northeastern region of Brazil, and on the whole country, Recife (literally “reef” in Portuguese) name alludes the stone reefs that abound in Recife’s shores, along with numerous bridges, small islands and canals which make the city be known as “Brazil’s Venice”.

One of the many good reasons for visiting Recife is because its beaches. Boa Viagem beach is the most popular among locals and tourists alike. Some 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the airport lies Porto de Galinhas, considered to be one of the best and most beautiful beaches in Brazil.

Recife old city still retains part of the Portuguese and Dutch colonial flavor. Several historic sites and buildings are found in the city, prominently Olinda that was declared World Heritage Site in 1982.

Carnaval in Refice is one of the most original, authentic and democratic in Brazil. Anybody can join and enjoy the frantic rhythm of Frevo and Maracatú music.
