A royal pleasure

Valladolid, de facto capital of the autonomous region of Castile and Leon, was originally settled in pre-Roman times by the Celtic Vaccaei people, and later the Romans themselves. It used to play an important role for Spanish royalty. A good example of this is the fact that one of the most significant weddings in Spanish history took place here: Queen Isabella I of Castile married  Ferdinand II of Aragon in a local palace.  Nowadays it is known by its lively university flare. Plaza Mayor is the perfect place to enjoy some “cañas” (tap beer).

This charming city preserves a number of historical houses and religious buildings in its old quarter, like the unfinished Cathedral, commissioned by King Philip II and designed by the architect Juan de Herrera; the large Gothic church of San Benito, built by the Benedictines between 1500 and 1515, with an unusual tower; the façade of the Dominican Church of San Pablo, characterized by Gothic statues and decoration built around 1500.

Even though it is an inland province, travelling to Valladolid gives you the opportunity to enjoy fish brought from the Cantabrian Sea, but its main speciality is lechazo (suckling baby lamb). Easter is one of the most spectacular and emotional fiestas in Valladolid.
