Serbia was chosen in the top 10 countries to visit in the Lonely Planet awards 2015, and the capital Belgrade is its most popular destination. Belgrade has always been an important city in Eastern Europe, a crossroads when east meets west. The city’s most significant landmark is Beogradska Tvrdava, an imposing fortress at the confluence of the Danube and the Sava rivers. A testament to the city’s strategic importance to the Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, Serbian and Austrian empires, the fortress is now the site of several museums and Kalemegdan, a vast park.

Culture vultures will be interested to visit Belgrade’s selection of palaces, such as the nineteenth century ‘Old Palace’ and the ‘New Palace’, where the current Serbian president has his office. Also worth a visit is the Skadarlija, popular part of the city with a vibrant Bohemian area with plenty of restaurants, bars and cafes.

Belgrade is also famous for its nightlife with many of Europe’s top DJs regularly playing at the hottest night spots in the city.
