Krakow, a city in southern Poland, is known for its medieval centre and Jewish quarter. The Old Town is centred around the Rynek Glówny (market square) and surrounded by Planty Park and what is left of the of the city’s medieval wall. The Jewish quarter is known as Kazimierz, and since the 1980s as become an important tourist attractions thanks to its Jewish heritage and Jewish-themed shops and restaurants, and of course as it was where the film Schindler’s List was shot. Medieval Kazimierz was on an island separate from Krakow until a bridge was built connecting the suburb to Krakow, which was then subsequently filled in during the nineteenth century. Those interested in social history should visit Nowa Huta, a communist-built town next to Krakow. The town was built in 1949 as a working-class town connected to Krakow by public transport and later joined to Krakow. The town boasts some of the most impressive Communist architecture in Poland. After visiting the central sights like as Wawel Castle, Wawal Cathedrala and St.Mary’s Basilica, Krakow is an excellent base to enjoy an exursion such a a visit to the Wieliczka Salt Mine, Tarnów and Auschwitz for those who wish.
